Approximately fifty automobiles have been marked with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to police.

Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were vandalized, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they announced in a release.

Law enforcement state they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued fluid.

The substance had been placed in the form of a Nazi symbol, they reported.

Officers then discovered numerous other vandalized cars and house walls in the surrounding area.

Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.

Police state preliminary tests suggest the liquid was likely human blood.

"There is still no lead as to its origin; officials are presently not aware of any physical harm in connection with the event," they added.

Local authorities announced they were trying "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for details.

A high-ranking representative said the incident rendered him stunned and required to be resolved promptly.

"This incident hits the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the far-right violent incident five years ago," he stated on online, recalling the killing of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at residents of foreign heritage in five years prior.
