Together Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.
Consider this a challenge for partners in committed relationships who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its streaming debut via Hulu. On the surface, it could look like typical physical horror, but within Together lies a deep contemplation about how we choose to love one another.
A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities
Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for over ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.
The narrative commences when the couple move from the urban environment to the rural area for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches conclude. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the two discover an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity takes hold of the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.
The whole movie is a slow burn of scares, blending elements of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and delivers them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.
Nuanced Portrayals
A large part of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.
Conversely, Tim senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and far away from his social circle. He is terrified of the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.
The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the obvious villain.
Both characters confront the kind of problems that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their future together.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these fears of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the allegory does not come across as hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights work together in a mutually beneficial way.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a strong argument for staying single. Meanwhile, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion plant anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your significant other and utter, “I’d do that for you”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can embark on right now.
Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform at present.
